Note: Thank you to the 13 people who attended this month’s meeting.

Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 14th.

Meeting Highlights

Welcome back to Ed Hickox!

Ed Hickox and Ray Gage said that the POA Board has approved allowing CERT volunteers paint addresses on the taxiways. Pete Vandersluis volunteered to head up this effort once the Board gives a formal response with details as to where, when, with what material, etc. Obviously, Pete will need lots of helpers for this work. Call Pete at 760-5738 if you would like to volunteer.

Ray Gage asked that the Board mention this painting effort in the next Update so that residents are made aware that this will be done and why. It was also suggested that Pete put a notice on Channel 2 to let residents know when CERT would be around to do this.

Ray Gage also mentioned that the Children’s Fall Festival would be held October 18th. Since this event will be held around the paved area near the runway and "tree," CERT is being asked to assist with "crowd control" (consisting of keeping the Munchkins away from the runway). Anyone who would like to volunteer should contact Michelle Bassett, Children’s Rec. Committee, at 322-4401 or drop me a note at sprucecreek@netzero.net.

Ed Hickox kicked off an effort to put together a Golf Tournament to raise money for CERT. Ed said that, if we charged $50.00 per player (includes play, cart, and food) and have 72 people participate, we could clear $1,500.00 for CERT. He suggested we each invite 2 neighbors/friends to participate – that would give us a minimum of 72 people. The following people volunteered to work with Ed – Ray Gage, Dottie Jernigan and Brenda Lear. If anyone else is interested, please contact Ed at 788-9111. The following ideas were offered:

  • § Scramble vs. 18 holes
§ January or February time frame (Club agrees with this time frame)
    § Plaques for trophies
§ Longest drive, closest putt, longest putt
    § Photographer for PR
§ Do a Tennis tournament too
    §
    Drink cart

  • Ed Hickox suggested that perhaps some of the money being raised could go toward a S.C. Informational Radio station. This station could be used to broadcast CERT information as well as any information Security wanted to make known. This station would have the flexibility to go live in the event of an emergency.

Alexis Montague Fortune said she would get with Officer Walter Melton to look at November or January for the next CERT training session. She will be calling the people she has on the list to see what time frame works best for those who wish to attend.

Ray Gage brought the group up to date on some things the POA Board is looking at to better control visitors and workers who enter S.C. He also mentioned the following topics:

  • How the POA Board plans to deal with residents who continually violate the speed limit: Fines!
  • Electronic sign for posting community activities/notices: Next year’s budget item.
  • Excellent source for training materials can be found at the Emergency Management Institute website at http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/crslist.asp .

Next Drill – It is time to start thinking about our next Simulated Disaster Drill. We need a volunteer to organize a group to make this happen. Please think about giving this a try. We will discuss it further in subsequent meetings.
